Episode: DACA’s Victory and Future Steps

Luis Cortes Romero is a partner in Immigrant Advocacy & Litigation Center where he practices exclusively in immigration litigation.

Luis was born in Mexico and raised in the California Bay Area, living in Redwood City and San Jose. He is a Dreamer and a recipient of President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (known as DACA). He graduated from San Jose State University where he studied Mexican American Studies. 

Luis is a trial and appellate lawyer who has represented clients in a wide variety of immigration-related cases, including constitutional issues, challenging immigration detention, and immigration consequences to criminal convictions. 

He has represented clients in high-profile constitutional litigation and represents clients in connection with governmental investigations.

Notably, Luis was one of the lead attorney that successfully protected DACA before the Supreme Court.

Alejandro Gonzales (aka Jando) is a Co-Founder and Chief Engineer of Abantu Audio. He's a mathematician and software engineer from Las Cruces, New Mexico, received his Master's in Machine Learning at UNM, Albuquerque, but books are his true escape. Through Abantu Audio he hopes to unite the resilient history and creativity of People of Color with his mathematical and technical knowledge to educate and empower all of those who have been disenfranchised.

Kelly Medina-López is a fronteriza from Las Cruces, New Mexico and an Assistant Professor of Composition Studies in the School of Humanities and Communication at California State University, Monterey Bay. She has a PhD in Rhetoric and Professional Communication with an emphasis in Cultural Rhetorics and Composition Studies from New Mexico State University. Her research interests include Latinx ghost stories and myths as critical decolonial research methods, critical making, chicanx/latinx rhetorics, border studies, and language politics.

Manny, also known as "Chino," is from the 562 area in Los Angeles, California. Both of his parents are from México (Aguacateros). He is the first to attend college in his familia, and he will graduate in Spring of 2021 with a double major in Lingustics and Chinese studies. He speaks tres idiomas fluently; English, Spanish, and Mandarin, while also learning Cantonese, Japanese, and Uyghur. His tres hogares son Los Ángeles, Beijing, Michoacán, and hopefully one day, Japón.

Edgar is a class of 2020 graduate from Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey, and aims to use his degree in film making to further amplify the stories of different communities of color. Edgar's goal is to make it to Hollywood and be a voice for other immigrant farm workers. Mayra Pelagio is a current graduate student at SJSU. She holds a B.S in Environmental Science and Management and a minor in Wildlife Conservation Biology from UC Davis. Mayra is passionate about social and environmental justice and is currently a community outreach consultant with Latinos United for a New America (LUNA) in their census campaign. LUNA serves communities in the East side of San Jose, with a mission to improve the quality of life of the Latinx families and future generations. Episode: Changing The Narrative Through Art

Dulce María López González, a low-income Mexican immigrant mujer living in the US, uses her experiences throughout her artworks with the intention to shake the audience out of their comfort zone and provoke others to analyze societal structures. Dulce uses painting, screen printing, watercolor art, and music in her projects as a method of communication and addressing racism, sexism, immigration, culture, politics, and drug trafficking. She hopes to continue doing art and mobilize to fight for the well-being of the people in her home country and her community in the US.

Christopher Sanchez's advocacy journey initiated protecting historical Chicano murals in Fullerton, CA, followed by political and social campaigns advocating for the Latino community. As a policy advocate for the Coalition for Huamne Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), he advances the organization's platform while educating members of the legislature, state boards and commissions, and the Governor's office on the issues facing immigrants in California.
